Character and "Beautiful Talk" in Mr. Penumbra

Write a paragraph on the character in Penumbra you think would be most likely to engage in what my seniors have called "beautiful talk" (the "coloring" version of talking, not a discussion, conversation, or debate). Explain why you think they would be most open to this type of collaborative talking, and point to a specific point in the story to support your claim. As you are writing, be sure to focus on employing a variety of sentence structures (at this stage, sentences with and without subordinate clauses), as we discussed in our first grammar lesson.

  1. I think that Mr. Penumbra himself would be the most likely to engage in "beautiful talk" because he seems very understanding and willing to listen to other people's ideas. One example that made me think this was when Penumbra and Clay agreed on what they should do to decode the codex vitae. He seemed to really listen and then contribute to what Clay was saying, and together they formed a plan.

  2. In the book Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, I believe Clay is most likely to speak in the form of beautiful talk out of all the characters. To speak in the form of beautiful talk, a person has to be independent but also open to working with other people and learning from them, which Clay often demonstrates in the book. One thing I noticed about Clay throughout the book was that he was always looking to become a smarter, more creative, more resourceful, and an overall better person. Clay is the only person to think to combine books and the digital world to crack the code, two forces that would normally not come together. Clay was able to think outside normality in the scene where all the Googlers are trying to crack the code with their machines, but all it really took was for Clay to apply knowledge that Google and digital technology gave him to books like The Dragon-Song Chronicles.

  3. Clay is the character most likely to engage in "beautiful talk." He is the character who is most prone to this form of collaborative talking because of his ability to add on to almost all of the subjects covered in Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore. Not only did he study computer programming and work as a web designer, but he also works as the store clerk at the book store. This allows him to talk with Mr. Penumbra and members of the Unbroken Spine about the store and the codex vitae, but also allows him to talk to Ashley and Neel about computers and Google. Essentially, Clay understands the topics in the book, which makes him able to talk constructively with almost all of the characters in the book. Clay also showed his ability to collaborate with and build on others ideas through his connection between technology and books, which is the most important part of "beautiful talk." He was able to establish a link between the computer world and the book world through communication, which was the most important act of "beautiful talk" in the book.

  4. Kat is the most likely to speak in "Beautiful Talk" because she always has a lot of energy and likes to talk and add to others ideas. In the book Kat is always wiling to talk to people and accept their ideas. She would also be good at "beautiful talk" because she stays focused on the issue but uses others ideas to help solve the problem at hand.

  5. Mr. Penumbra is the most likely to participate in “beautiful talk” because it is such a new and inventive concept that I think Mr. Penumbra will enjoy it a lot. In the story, he was the most open to change and new ideas. Other members of the Unbroken Spine, such as Corvina, took actions in the book that led me to believe that they wouldn’t support “beautiful talk” since it lacks a lot of form or definition. Unlike Mr. Penumbra, Corvina likes things to be controllable and definite. As a result, not as much got done (it took many, many years to solve the puzzle); whereas with the idea that Mr. Penumbra supported, it took only a matter of days. “Beautiful talk” is a new idea that creates a space where everyone can feel comfortable and not pressured. It lacks some structure, but gains more in other places. Students can engage in better conversation if they don’t feel pressure and aren't intimidated by their peers or teachers, which is what “beautiful talk” eliminates.

  6. I think that Mr. Penumbra would be the most likely to engage in “beautiful talk” because he goes about life by appreciating the new and different concepts around him. An example of Mr. Penumbra appreciating new concepts is his interest in technology. Throughout the book we see how much he wants to start using technology in his shop as well as in his daily life. Mr. Penumbra is definitely the most open to change in the book. Along with being the most appreciative, Mr. Penumbra is also the most understanding. He understands that at this point, the bookstore would definitely benefit from change. Throughout the story, Mr. Penumbra heard out the the other characters’ opinions and ideas. This is why I believe that Mr. Penumbra is the most likely to engage in “beautiful talk”.

  7. I believe that Kat would be the most likely to participate in “beautiful talk”. The overall goal of “beautiful talk” is to understand each other’s point of views and learn from each other. Keeping this idea in mind, Kat is very passionate about her curiosity about immortality and is willing to listen to anyone for an answer to it, including the Unbroken Spine. She even participates in “beautiful talk” with Mr. Penumbra when she helps him try to decode the Codex Vitae. She has a lot to contribute to any conversation, given her knowledge of technology. Kat so badly wants to contribute to the Google community with her ideas. Overall, Kat is the most likely to participate in “beautiful talk” because she is so passionate. She will listen to any idea to help her get where she wants go.

  8. In mr penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore Clay is most likely to engage in “beautiful talk” because of his ability to understand and adjust to the situation at hand. Clay is put in a very difficult spot when all of google lets him down. This not only separates him from Kat, but also causes him to realize what he has to do as an individual to successfully decode the book. Clay throughout the entire book is forced to adjust to what others say may he like it or not. Towards the beginning of the book Clay and his roommate Mat are shown in the bookstore. Mat is very determined to figure out why the books on the top shelf are unable to be sold. With heavy pressure from Mat, Clay, later succumbs and adjust to what Mat had stated. Throughout the entire book Clay is forced to adjust and understand others. This is why Clay is why clay is most likely to engage in “beautiful talk.”

  9. Out of all the characters in Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore, I think Kat would be the most likely to engage in a “beautiful talk.” Since the entered the story, she always seemed a little bit more outgoing. She was also very smart and creative. Based on her level of intelligence, she seems like the type of person who would engage in a new, innovative way of speaking. Not only that, but it would also be very interesting to talk with her, being as she worked at google!

  10. In Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, I believe that Clay would be the most likely to engage in 'beautiful talk'. From what I understand, 'beautiful talk' is the collaborative form of discussion, where one not only adds his ideas but listens to others' perspectives and builds off of those as well. Clay demonstrates this patient and open-minded personality throughout the novel. He's open and willing to listen to what the people within Google have to say, but also adds his ideas when he realizes he's onto something. Of all of the characters, I think he's especially respectful of others' opinions and ideas, but also willing to put himself out there and explain his thoughts. This leads me to believe that of all the characters in Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, Clay is the most likely to participate in 'beautiful talk'.

  11. I think Mat would engage in beautiful talk the most. He prefers to work with physical materials to create special effects instead of computers. He shows this when he makes the copy of the logbook to help Clay. Mat loves to make beautiful things as you can see when Ashley comes home to his boiling oil. “This is Mat’s secret weapon, his get-out-of-jail-free card: Mat makes things that are beautiful.” pg. 25. I believe he would prefer to express his opinions in a way that could not be right or wrong. Because he was inspired by Clay’s love for the bookstore, he built a model of it. I believe this shows how he would like to see other people’s opinions and build off of them.

  12. I think that the character in Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore that is most likely to engage in "beautiful talk" is the main character, Clay Jannon. Clay has a collaborative personality and has an open mind that allows him to have "beautiful conversations." For example, when he meets Kat; Clay is working at an old bookstore, which is the opposite of the high tech life that Kat introduces him to. Because of his "open minded-ness" he is able to combine books and Google's technology.
